The halogen elements are fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), astatine (At), and tennessine (Ts). Halogen, any of the six nonmetallic elements that constitute Group 17 (Group VIIa) of the periodic table. The word halogen comes from the Greek roots hal-, meaning “salt,” and -gen, meaning “to produce.” The most well known of these is sodium chloride, or common table salt (also called halite).
